A North-east music festival that has become one of the most popular events on the Scottish music calendar is preparing to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
Final preparations are now under way for this year’s Montrose Music Festival – or MoFest as it has become affectionately known – which first kicked off in 2008.
Started by a small group of locals who were unhappy with the live music scene in the town, it has gone from strength to strength, attracting top acts and more than 15,000 revellers each year.
This year rockers Deacon Blue will open the festival on May 26 while the Beach Boys will close the weekend’s festivities on May 28. But, it was Scottish funk heroes Average White Band who opened the first ever festival to a sell-out crowd in Montrose Town Hall.
Deacon Blue first performed at MoFest in 2009 and have been followed by The Proclaimers, Status Quo, Madness, Ash, Jools Holland, Ocean Colour Scene and Bryan Adams. MoFest chairman David Paton said: “10 years is an incredible achievement. Myself, and the committee past and present, would like to thank everyone who has supported the festival since its humble beginnings. It’s testament that anything is possible with the right attitude and some community spirit.”
He added: “We are delighted to welcome back such an iconic Scottish band (Deacon Blue) with a great MoFest history for this milestone weekend. MoFest has racked up some of the biggest bands in music over the years and, as one of the most influential rock and pop acts of all-time, the Beach Boys tops the list.”
Over the course of the weekend revellers have the chance to watch more than 100 gigs in dozens of venues around the town.
The Holy Ghosts, Chris Helme, The Mandrakes, Academy Strangers and Lucy Zambers have performed in recent years.
This year Arms Against, Broken Rivers, Huge Mouse, Kinell and Macha are among the bands added to the line-up.
Two new venues have been added with Montrose Rugby Club and the Hillside Hotel having music and activities across the weekend.
Anne Jenkins, vice chairwoman of MoFest, said: “There’s just something about it, the atmosphere over the weekend is amazing.
“Montrose has such an amazing buzz about it.”
