A football top worn by Gothenburg Great and current Scotland manager Alex McLeish sold for more than double its estimate at auction.

The shirt worn when Aberdeen defeated Spanish footballing giants Real Madrid to win the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983 sold for £4,700.

Sportingold Limited in Saunderton, England, was selling the piece of memorabilia today.

An estimate on the shirt was set at £2,000, however bids started before the auction had already pushed the price to £4,500.

It was one of two shirts worn by McLeish during the game.

A description of the item said: “There is a certificate from the Football Museum, Madrid, stating that the shirt was exchanged after the match in Gothenburg which Aberdeen won 2-1 after extra-time in probably the most famous match in their history.

“Isidore San Jose came on at the start of extra-time while McLeish played the whole game and wore two different shirts, one in each half. This shirt was his second half shirt.”
