An Aberdeen granny almost threw her £10,000 winning ticket in the bucket.

The lucky winner of the Evening Express’ Galaxy Giveaway was Liala Cruickshank who initially thought the ticket was junk.

Readers had the chance to win a range of prizes from £50, £100 to £1,000 in the competition that ran yesterday.

And, there was one newspaper with the mammoth £10k top prize.

Liala, of Hilton, was shocked to discover she was the winner after making a phone call to her daughter Fiona Gray who checked the ticket.

She said: “I get the paper delivered every day and when I opened it up I saw the ticket. I didn’t pay much attention and just thought it would go in the bin. When I did I saw the £10,000, so I phoned my daughter to ask her.”

The retired receptionist couldn’t believe her luck.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it. I’m in total shock. When I told my family they were really excited for me to have won.”

At the moment Liala, who has two children, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren, hasn’t decided what she will spend the money on.

She said: “I really haven’t had a chance to think about it.”
