Former Aberdeen canal to be temporarily filled in to create access road for railway improvements

A railway body is looking to fill in a historic canal as part of improvement works.

Network Rail is looking to create a new access road while it works to upgrade the line between Aberdeen and Inverness.

The new road would be located on Station Road next to the A96 on Great Northern Road in Woodside.

The rail infrastructure body has applied to Aberdeen City Council to temporary fill in land next to the Woodside playing fields, which was historically a canal.

A new road is needed so a crane can be utilised during improvement work at the former canal that used to run from Port Elphinstone, near Inverurie, to the Granite City. Planning documents submitted to the local authority said construction is set to start on May 11 and last for 14 weeks.

The documents said: “The work to be undertaken is part of the Aberdeen to Inverness East Main Works as part of the overall Highland Enhancement Programme. Included in this is the replacement of an existing steel bridge, carrying the Aberdeen to Keith line over Station Road within the Woodside area of Aberdeen.

“In order to carry out the installation of the new steel fabricated bridge it will be necessary to form a temporary road across the site of a historical canal to allow access for the heavy duty crane, attendant trucks, delivery of bridge units and general construction traffic required.

“Prior to carrying out any works full permissions will be sought from the appropriate authorities and works will be carried out to cause the minimum of disturbance to the ground and surrounds.”

If approved, work on the temporary road would start in April and would involve traffic restrictions on the A96.

The planning document added: “All vehicle movements during the construction of the infill will be made under the protection of an off-peak lane closure to A96 city bound. Trucks delivering fill materials will enter the lane closure in order to reverse over the footway to tip load.”
