First trailer for Portsoy film Whisky Galore! starring Eddie Izzard released

A film shot in a popular North-east fishing village has had it’s first trailer released online today.

Based on the real life event of the SS Politician, with a massive cargo of whisky, running aground off Eriskay in 1941 was filmed in Portsoy.

Whisky Galore!, a remake of the classic 1949 Ealing comedy, was filmed in Portsoy last year.

The film stars comedian Eddie Izzard, playing Home Guard commander Captain Wagget, Trainspotting actor James Cosmo, Game of Thrones actress Ellie Kendrick, Gregor Fisher and Kevin Guthrie.


The film, released on Friday, May 5, is the latest to use the region’s stunning landscapes as a backdrop.

Sunset Song, based on the classic Scots novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, which was also set and filmed in the Aberdeenshire area.

Filming took place in locations like Fettercairn, Arbuthnott and the Glen Tanar Estate, and many locals got the chance to appear as extras in the movie.
