Elaine C Smith is bowing out as queen of the much-loved panto at His Majesty’s after eight years, theatre bosses said today.
But the comedy duo of Alan McHugh and Jordan Young will return in Aladdin at HMT this Christmas, said Aberdeen Performing Arts.
Elaine will be starring in panto in her native Glasgow this year.
Jane Spiers, chief executive of Aberdeen Performing Arts, said: “At the end of our last pantomime Dick McWhittington we bid a very fond farewell to the wonderful Elaine C Smith, who had been our panto queen for many years.
“Elaine came to Aberdeen eight years ago to do her first pantomime here and the warmth of Aberdeen audiences kept her coming back year after year.”
Jane said the theatre team was delighted Alan and Jordan will be keeping HMT audiences laughing.
“We are very excited to welcome back the dream team that is Alan and Jordan – they are true entertainers and have our audiences in stitches of laughter.”
Alan has been HMT’s panto dame for 13 years and written each of the shows he has appeared in.
He said: “What’s so special about the HMT show is we give the city and people of Aberdeen their very own panto with its own identity, celebrating the city.
“So I guarantee a great family night out – a roller-coaster ride of Doric thrills, spills (not all of them rehearsed) and belly laughs from start to finish.”
Jordan has been Alan’s comedy partner for nine years and they are widely hailed as the finest panto duo in Scotland. In recent years, Jordan has also played Alex McAllister in River City and appeared in BBC Scotland’s hilarious spoof Scot Squad.
Jordan said: “Aberdeen audiences are something else, they are so warm and friendly. I’m really pleased to be returning to HMT.”
Michael Harrison, managing director of Qdos Entertainment pantomime division which produces the panto, said: “As Aberdeen audiences know (Alan and Jordan) have such brilliant comic timing and a fantastic chemistry.”
Further casting will be announced for Aladdin, which runs at HMT from December 2 to January 7.
