Disruption warning for A90 as section of road to be resurfaced

A busy section of a major north-east road is to close to drivers for three nights this weekend.

The A90 at Ellon will be shut while BEAR Scotland undertakes road surfacing works.

The work on the A90 between the two Ellon roundabouts will start at 7.30pm on Friday and continue until Monday morning.

Drivers have been warned about the closures as signs for the roadworks have appeared along the route in preparation for the project.

A BEAR Scotland spokesman said a diversion route has been agreed with Aberdeenshire Council for the closure.

Drivers looking to continue their journey will be diverted on to the B9000 and A920.

It is not known how much the A90 maintenance works at Ellon will cost.

A spokesman for BEAR Scotland said: “We have a resurfacing scheme commencing on Friday at 7.30pm.

“The works are programmed to take place over the weekend under 24-hour working, with works programmed to be completed by 6.30am on Monday.

“The diversion route has been agreed with Aberdeenshire Council.

“A letter drop was completed last Thursday in order to notify affected householders of the works. Variable message signs were also placed on Monday to make road users aware.”

Councillor Gillian Owen, who has been campaign for improvements at the Ellon section for a number of years welcomed the upgrades.

She said:  “I have been pressing hard to get action on the South Road Roundabout at the end of the dual carriageway.

“The surface is extremely poor leading to difficult driving conditions, any improvement is to be welcomed.

“I also look forward to a refresh of the junction white lines particularly on the filter to Ellon.”

Councillor Isobel Davidson said: “This resurfacing work is much needed but will cause major disruption for traffic travelling on the A90 and in and out of Ellon.

“The last time this stretch of road was resurfaced it caused problems for local businesses and I hope that Transport Scotland has taken the time to consult them to ensure that diversions are properly signed.”

Fellow Ellon councillor Richard Thomson said: “The A90 Ellon roundabout has been in poor condition for some time so I very much welcome these works.”
