Cuba-inspired bar aims to shake up Retailer Awards success

Promsing Aberdeen a hot and spicy fiesta, Revolucion de Cuba believes it has all the ingredients to win a title at the Evening Express Retailer Awards.

Taking inspiration from Cuba’s Havana heyday, the bar has quickly established itself since putting down roots seven months ago.

With its reservation list bursting at the seams, the city centre bar hopes to scoop Pub/Bar of the Year at this year’s EE Retailer Awards, which celebrate and showcase outstanding retailers in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Entries for the awards, which are sponsored by Aberdeen Inspired, are now open.

And this year’s glittering awards ceremony is set to be held at the Mercure Aberdeen Ardoe House Hotel on Thursday, November 2.

General manager of Revolucion de Cuba Russell Davidson said he was keen to enter the Retailer Awards as the city bar hopes to be recognised for bringing something “a little bit different” to the table.

He said: “For me, an award is something to be shared with everyone. We have 55 people working in this building but, on top of that, there are the bands, security and many other people involved in making this work on a weekly basis.

“Being shortlisted would be a huge recognition of all of our work. It’s a hugely recommendable awards to be involved in and it would mean a lot to us. I’d definitely recommend others to enter as anything can happen.”

The first Scottish Revolucion de Cuba to open, Russell said the bar brings a new style of entertainment to the city centre.

Russell said: “Everything about us looks and feels a little bit different. We’ve certainly broke the mould in what to expect from a city centre bar and many of our customers say that they feel like they’re on holiday when they visit us.

“From the way we’ve decorated it with big ceiling fans, authentic Cuban tiles to the products we sell, the live entertainment we put on and everything in between, we help customers escape the daily mundane and allow them to enjoy their free time in the most fun way possible.”

A total of 15 categories are included in this year’s Retailer Awards with two new titles up for grabs – Hotel of the Year and Union Street Champion Retailer of the Year which recognises businesses which have added to the footfall in the heart of the city centre.

Having worked in management positions in the hospitality industry for more than 12 years, Russell recognises the importance of winning local awards, not just for him personally, but for the teams involved and the customers who visit regularly.

Participating in the awards process and completing his entry form online at, was a helpful, reflective process, said Russell.

He said: “Recognising success on any level is important. It gives the chance to highlight some fantastic venues that are out there and it gives them increased credibility.

“We have some fantastic venues around the city centre and we should definitely be celebrating them.

“We’ve had a great amount of success in a short space of time which is very exciting and we’re blessed to work with a great team here as we all bring a lot of different ideas to the table and we all share that work hard play hard mentality.”

Entries for the Evening Express Retailer Awards close on Monday, July 24.
