Lorry driver fined for crashing into police motorbike at Haudagain roundabout

A lorry driver has been fined after crashing into a police motorbike on a busy Aberdeen roundabout.

The officer was left with a fracture to his leg and soft tissue damage to his shoulder following the collision on the Haudagain roundabout on October 24 2018.

Tomasz Czarnecki, 48, faced a charge of careless driving after his lorry struck the motorbike at around 11.30am.

Depute fiscal Lynzi Souter said: “On the day in question an officer was riding a marked police motorcycle. He was coming west-bound along Great Northern Road towards the Haudagain with the intention of heading to Inverurie.

As the officer made his way around the roundabout “a lorry emerged from lane three directly into the path of the officer”.

Mrs Souter added: “This was independently observed by various witnesses.

“The officer attempted to take action to avoid a collision but wasn’t able to do so, resulting in a collision between the near side of the motorcycle and front offside of the lorry.

“The officer and motorcycle were pushed across the road surface towards the hub of the roundabout. The accused, who was the driver of the lorry, got out and contacted the emergency services.

“The officer was taken to hospital and was found to have a fracture to his lower leg and soft tissue damage to his shoulder as a result of the collision.”

Czarnecki was cautioned and told police “he hadn’t seen the police officer on the roundabout prior to the collision”.

Czarnecki, of Sumburgh Crescent, was not personally present at court but pled guilty via letter to careless driving.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined him £500 and gave him five penalty points.
