Councillors give backing to new supermarket plan

The proposed development on Oldmeldrum’s outskirts.

Plans for a supermarket in a North-east town have been unanimously backed.

Formartine Area Committee went against Aberdeenshire Council officer recommendations, which were to refuse a retail development in Oldmeldrum.

The proposed site by APCC Ltd at North Meadows Industrial Estates in Oldmeldrum was approved by delegated grant after a discussion by committee members.

Officers indicated the application should be refused for a number of reasons including the land being earmarked for employment and not retail.

The site would be over 7,500sqm which would include a 560sqm supermarket and four 173sqm units.

It is understood that the Co-op would move into the supermarket site creating 25 jobs and that at least two other businesses including a gym are interested in the smaller units.

More than 200 letters of support were received for the application with no objections.
