A North-east councillor claims he has been kicked off the SNP group due to his support for Brexit and opposition to business rate rises.
Banff councillor John Cox – a 30 year veteran in local Government – revealed he had not been allowed to stand as a party candidate in May’s council elections.
Cllr Cox, who chairs the Banff and Buchan area committee, also unsuccessfully stood against Aberdeenshire Council’s co-leader Richard Thomson in a battle to lead the SNP.
Now Cllr Cox has declared he will fight to keep his Banff and District seat as an independent candidate.
Cllr Cox said: “The bottom line is that I am not a ‘yes man’ and have stood in support of my constituents and this has gone against the party.
Council co-leader Richard Thomson insisted the group did not want a “yes man” but that Cllr Cox had not been willing to compromise on various issues.
