A north-east animal welfare group hopes to save 2,000 hens from slaughter.
The British Hen Welfare Trust is appealing to the public to offer the birds a “chance to enjoy freedom” with a rehoming day in Stonehaven this Saturday.
The trust is asking anyone with space in their back garden to get in touch and save a hen.
Francesca Mapp, marketing and communications officer for the charity, said: “These hardworking hens have the chance to enjoy freedom for the first time, and we are urgently appealing to kind-hearted members of the public to come forward and adopt them.
“Not only are these hens endearing, inquisitive and charming, there’s also a good chance they’ll keep laying you eggs for your breakfast.”
To rehome any of the birds, those interested should register details online at bhwt.org.uk and then call the charity’s rehoming team on 01884 860084 before Friday.
