Gothenburg Great Neale Cooper today urged the Dons to do all they can to retain star winger Jonny Hayes for next season.
The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland cap has emerged as a transfer target for Championship side Wigan Athletic.
Latics boss Gary Caldwell is reportedly ready to table a bid of around £500,000 to secure Hayes who was shortlisted for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award.
Cooper accepts it is inevitable Hayes’ red-hot form would bring clubs calling.
The Irishman has two years left on his Pittodrie deal having signed an extension in December 2014 tying him to the club until summer 2018.
Cooper hopes the Dons reject any approach to stave off the “nightmare” of losing Hayes, with £500,000 way below valuation for the Dubliner.
He said: “Hopefully Hayes will not move on this summer as he has been fantastic for Aberdeen and is one of their top boys.
“To lose him would be a nightmare.
“It is tough for a manager because you want your players to do well but when they do other clubs come looking and sometimes money talks.
“You can’t blame other teams looking at him and putting in offers but Hayes is worth more than £500,000 which is not a lot of money when you consider what is being spent in England.”
