North-east lifeboats have been called out after a mayday call was received.
The Coastguard also joined the search of the Moray Firth, near Macduff, after the distress call was received at 1pm.
Rescue teams from MacDuff, Buckie, Banff and Portsoy are all involved in the search.
A rescue helicopter from Inverness has also been called in to help.
A spokesperson from HM Coastguard said: “We received a short spoken word mayday distress call at 1pm today.
“Coastguard Rescue Teams from MacDuff, Buckie, Banff, and Portsoy, lifeboats from Buckie and MacDuff, and the Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter based at Inverness are all searching the Moray Firth.
“We are now in the process of suspending the search pending further information.
“The assets are now returning to their stations.”
