Kirsty Blackman has today called for the Brexit decision to be “put to the people”.
In a response to Theresa May’s statement and decision to defer a vote on the Brexit deal, the Aberdeen North MP asked the question in the House of Commons
Kirsty Blackman said: “The Prime Minister has been forced to pull tomorrow’s vote in a stunning display of pathetic cowardice.”
She added: “The vote tomorrow night would have shown the will of this House but this Government is focused on saving the Prime Minister’s job and her party, instead of doing what is right for these countries.”
Kirsty Blackman ended her statement by asking: “Members across this house don’t want your deal, the EU don’t want to renegotiate – isn’t the only way to break this deadlock to put it to the people?”
In her response, the Prime Minister said: “I have said, and she will not hear me say anything different from what I have said previously. I believe it is important to honour the result of the referendum.
“I believe it is a matter of the duty of members of this house to honour that referendum result and I believe also it is a matter of faith in politicians that those many people who for the first time ever, or for many decades went out and voted for leaving the European Union that they’re able to have the confidence that the politicians in this house delivered for them.”
