Coastguard teams from Aberdeen were launched following reports of a flare.
HM Coastguard was alerted to the concerns at 7.52pm yesterday.
The lifeboat was launched to search the Bridge of Don area for any “vessels in distress”.
A spokeswoman said: “We received a report of a flare launch possibly off the coast of Aberdeen near the Bridge of Don area. The coastguard and Aberdeen lifeboat were searching the area for any vessels in distress.”
The area was thoroughly searched by the teams but nothing was found.
A spokesman for HM Coastguard added: “A team from Banff coastguard were down visiting and they sent them along.”
The lifeboats were stood down at around 9.05pm.
