ABERDEEN boxer John Docherty today won Commonwealth Youth Games gold in Samoa.
The 17-year-old Byron Boxing club star overcame England’s Benjamin Whittaker in the 75kg final in Apia in the early hours of this morning.
There was double medal joy as Byron’s Billy Stuart also claimed silver in the 56kg division.
Docherty said: “The gold is coming back to Scotland.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling.
“I just can’t believe how far I’ve come to get gold.”
Byron team-mate Stuart, 17, lost out in the 56kg final to Northern Ireland’s James McGivern.
Six time Scottish champion Stuart said: “ I didn’t come all the way to the other side of the world to go home with nothing.
“I’m going home with a silver medal.
“It feels absolutely brilliant and I’m over the moon to join the other Team Scotland medallists.
There was further North-east medal success in Samoa as Alisha Rees claimed 200m sprint silver.
Rees had already won 100m bronze.
The 16-year-old Banchory Stonehaven athlete, who ran 23.61, said: “It’s incredible, the best feeling ever.
“Coming across that line and hearing I had finished second, nothing can beat that.”
