A theatre company which started the career of a TV actress is celebrating 25 years of putting on musicals, plays and pantos in the North-east.
Phoenix Theatre was established in 1990 and musical Annie was its first production, which was performed at the Arts Centre – now the Arts Centre and Theatre (ACT) in 1991.
And Aberdeen-born actress Laura Main – who is currently starring in BBC One’s Call the Midwife – played the title role.
The former Hazlehead Academy pupil started her career off with Phoenix before going on to perform in Treading the Boards at the University of Aberdeen.
Phoenix Theatre was formed by Liz Milne and Clare Haggart, who are now directors.
The pair were both involved in lead roles at Attic Theatre Group, as well as being involved in the University of Aberdeen Student Show, when they decided to set up their own company.
And it’s become a family affair as Jonnie Milne, whose mum Liz is co-director, joined the group in 1998 when he took part in his first show A Grand Music Hall Extravaganza.
And Jonnie’s sister Katie, 24, is playing the lead role of Elle Woods in the company’s upcoming production of Legally Blonde: The Musical.
His sister Jennie, 33, was also a member of the group before moving to Canada.
Meanwhile, husband of co-director Clare Haggart is the group’s musical director and her daughter Colette Murray is choreographer.
Jonnie, 27, said: “It’s something as a family that we’re really proud of and we’re all very proud of what our mum and Clare have achieved.
“I first took part in a show in 1998 and Phoenix Youth was set up off the back of this. My past 18 years here have certainly been an experience.”
In addition to the group’s adult company, they also run a well-established drama school for children aged four to 18.
Around 45 to 50 people take part in the adult company’s shows while around 150 to 200 children take part in the youth classes and performances.
For their upcoming 25th anniversary, Phoenix Theatre are performing Legally Blonde: The Musical at HMT on Wednesday, February 24 until Saturday, February 27.
