23-year-old jailed for possessing ‘obscene’ images of child abuse

A Westhill man has been jailed after being found with images of “obscene and depraved abuse of children”.

Lewis Leslie, 23, was found in possession of more than 3,000 indecent images of children on a laptop and mobile phone, hundreds of which were the highest category A level.

Fiscal depute Katy Begg told Aberdeen Sheriff Court that Leslie’s home was searched by police with a warrant at 7.15am on February 8.

She told the court that during a police interview Leslie “stated that the videos and images were downloaded by accident”.

Ms Begg added: “Later in the interview he made reference to only going through a phase of enjoying the images, and the thought of enjoying the images now made him feel sick.”

Leslie, whose address was given in court papers as Burnland Place, Westhill, previously pleaded guilty to possessing and taking, or permitting to be taken, indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children between November 9, 2015, and February 8 this year.

Iain Hingston, Leslie’s solicitor, said: “He comes across as someone who is fairly naive.

“He was fairly lonely and isolated during that period. He was someone with really no circle of friends who rarely went out.

“His only reason for getting out of bed during that period was work.”

Mr Hingston also said Leslie lacked social skills and suffered from depression.

He added: “Clearly he’s facing a very serious charge. He always accepted and understood that.”

Mr Hingston said Leslie initially started through a particular chat room app on his phone.

He said: “That’s not an uncommon route to this type of offending.”

Sentencing Leslie, Sheriff William Summers told him possessing indecent images is “not a victimless offence”.

He added some images showed “obscene and depraved abuse of children, some of whom were very young”.

He sentenced Leslie to a total of 21 months in jail and five years under supervision.

Leslie will also be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.
