Few people can enjoy the wonders of the Northern Lights from their back garden, but Jan and Barry Hobbs have done exactly that for more than 20 years.
Shieldaig in Bograxie near Inverurie, with its 15 acres of land and picturesque setting, is no ordinary family home.
Barry and Jan Hobbs moved to Scotland in 1993 and had only intended to stay for two years, but fell in love with the area.
It’s not hard to see why, as the four-bedroom detached bungalow is surrounded by beautiful open countryside, and the family even added an extension rather than move to a bigger house.
It is with a heavy heart they are preparing to say goodbye, however, with plans to move closer to relatives, along with their nine-year-old Labrador, Alfie.
Shieldaig has also been home to their two sons – Daniel, 29, and 25-year-old Ben.
“We relocated to Scotland in 1993, only intending to stay for two years and ended up staying for some 25 years, more than 22 of them at Shieldaig,” said Jan, 61.
“We are now reluctantly moving to be closer to relatives.”
The spacious lounge with large picture windows overlooking the front garden features a wood burning stove and is on semi open plan with the dining area and of course, the stunning view. French doors lead to the bright and airy conservatory again making the most of that view and French doors to the rear garden.
The kitchen has been recently refurbished with a range of base and wall units and benefits from a large breakfast bar. Located off the kitchen is the handy utility room with a door to the rear garden.
There are three bedrooms to the front of the property, all with double fitted wardrobes, while the master bedroom is located to the rear and features French doors to the garden, large dressing area with four wardrobes and access to the en-suite shower room.
Finishing the internal accommodation is the family bathroom with a three-piece suite and separate shower enclosure.
Outside there is a driveway, double garage, and two car ports while the stable area has been split into workshops and a tack room.
The front garden is mainly laid to lawn with areas of mature bushes and shrubs.
To the rear there is a superb sized garden mainly laid to lawn with large lock-block patio area. The garden extends into the 1.7 acre paddock and further extends to approximately 12½ acres of hacking ground.
