This former mill, which is home to Clive and Sue Randall, is charming, quirky and majestic in the extreme.
And it has been a sheer joy and labour of love for the couple who bought the building in 2003.
Recently retired, Clive, 55, said: “Sue and I had a joint vision for this property, which was being sold with planning permission for development of four houses. “It is a big property, originally it was a steading and farm cottage. We have restored half of it, the other half awaits to be restored.”
The Randalls were keen to be as sympathetic as possible and work with what they had, and they also took the bold decision to rip up the plans that had been set out for its redevelopment.
Domestic goddess Sue, 54, said: “We decided to do our own thing!
“We had a clear idea of which room was which. The only thing we changed was the addition of a window downstairs.“
With tremendous attention to detail, the Randalls have transformed the property yet have retained most of the original features – from internal doors to exposed beams and panelling, vaulted ceilings, granite exposed brick wall and an imposing open fireplace. A bespoke staircase and flagstone flooring – which conceals ground floor source heating – only lends to its charm.
The couple love each and every room in their home for different reasons.
Sue loves her dining kitchen and lounge the most, while Clive will miss seeing nature at its very best in the changing seasons, keeping a close eye over the clay pond – which attracts otters, heron, house martins and frogs .
Summing up their home in a few words, Clive said: “Quality, sustainability and future development.“
The Randalls are looking to move south but they leave with warm and lovely family memories.
