It was a labour of love for Kevin Fraser to transform what was essentially a cow shed into this fabulous detached steading.
For Kevin had to demonstrate the greatest of patience – over three years worth – before he and his wife Alison and daughters Samantha and Abbey were able to move in to their dream home.
But it was to prove to be very much worth the wait, and the whole family have loved living here for the past nine years.
Kevin, 51, a project manager with Scottish Southern Electricity Networks, said: “We had to wait a full year to get planning permission, so I spent the time dismantling the building myself, mainly in the evenings and weekends.
“I ended up with about 100 tons of stones and as a result I was able to build a 40 metre wall.”
The accommodation – which encompasses 275 square metres – includes a kitchen/family room, lounge, utility room, bathroom, master bedroom with en-suite shower room, four further bedrooms, family bathroom and shower room.
With the help of Baxters Design, Kevin and Alison, 50, a dinner lady at Mintlaw Academy, were able to transform their “cow shed” in to Thistledhu – a home to be proud of.
Kevin is most proud of how energy efficient the detached steading is with its ground source heating with under-floor heating, solar panels and central vacuuming system.
With the exception of a splash of colour in the lounge and bedrooms, Kevin and Alison have opted for neutral tones throughout the property.
Now Samantha, 20 and Abbey, 17, are all grown up, the Fraser family are planning to downsize and they hope to move back in to the village of Mintlaw.
But they leave behind the warmest of memories.
“Its been a very happy home for us, said Kevin.
So would Kevin consider taking on another project?
“No thanks!” he said with a laugh.
