The thought of building your own house while holding down a job and looking after newborn twins would be enough to put off even the most ambitious of house builders, but not Jenny and Mark Robertson.
Unfazed by the challenge, the pair completed their six-bedroom villa named Little Brownhill in Rothienorman 11 years ago, just as the twins turned one.
The fabulous rural location was the main draw for the Robertsons to build their own home, but the pair hadn’t always lived in the countryside.
“We used to live in Bridge of Don in Aberdeen,” said Jenny, 51. “It’s like chalk and cheese really, going from being somewhere so densely populated to somewhere so rural.
“We wanted the twins to grow up in the countryside but the time was never right.
“In the end we just bit the bullet and bought a piece of land when I was pregnant because things weren’t going to get any easier with toddlers on the go! We wanted them to reap the benefits of living in the country right from the start.”
Jenny, who runs her own high-end cake business, and Mark, who works in oil and gas, sketched out a plan of the house and gave it to their architect. From there it was a case of watching their dream home take shape over the course of just six months.
“What we wanted just wasn’t on the market at the time,” said Jenny. “Obviously we wanted a lovely house but there were some other requirements too.
“Mark is a mechanic to trade and wanted a garage big enough to have an inspection pit.
“Personally I love pottering about in the garden and wanted a decent space for a greenhouse.
“We managed to fit both these things into our house-building brief which was fantastic.
“The views were another special thing for us.”
It’s with heavy hearts that the family are getting ready to move on from a home which has brought them so much joy.
“Jake and Katie are 12 years old now and about to be teenagers,” said Jenny. “They are keen to have a bit more independence. So we are hoping to move a bit closer to Aberdeen. If it was up to me, we would stay at Little Brownhill forever.”
