For Margo and Zander Sangster, 2002 was a big year. Not only did they tie the knot but they also built their very own marital home: The Beeches.
The five-bedroom property is located just outside Peterhead and has been the ideal place to raise their two children, Ellie, 14, and 10-year-old Ryan.
Margo, a self-employed cleaner, and Zander, a site foreman, always had the ambition to build their own house and jumped at the chance to buy a plot of land in their ideal location.
“We are country folk,” said Margo, 43.
“And always wanted to be in the countryside to have a family.
“I’m from Peterhead myself so I know the area well. When the opportunity came up to buy this land we just had to go for it.”
And while the pair were building the house they lived separately at their parents’ homes so they could put all of their money into the build.
She added: “It was a relief to have it finished and to finally live together in what we designed.”
And what they created is an impressive space, with the kitchen diner ideal for daily family life, while the lounge is a lovely room, perfect for putting your feet up.
Five years ago the couple added a generous extension.
With windows on every wall, the sun room has fantastic views out to the surrounding countryside and, even though it’s the newest part of the house, Margo says it’s her favourite.
“It’s a room I love spending time in,” she said.
“It always seems to be sunny and warm in there no matter what the weather is outside.
“We installed under-floor heating in the sun room too which is lovely on your feet, especially in this cold weather we’ve been having.
“It’s a great room for having a break, and we actually use it much more than the main lounge.
“Quite often the kids use the main lounge as their TV room so there is plenty of space from everyone.”
Just 10 minutes from the centre of Peterhead, the location was a big part of the appeal when Margot and Zander, 48, purchased the plot.
“It’s so convenient for everything a family needs,” said Margo.
“In fact we are actually just planning to move down the road a little bit. My dad has offered us a plot of land nearby to build another house and we couldn’t turn down the opportunity.
“We will be closer to my family which will be great.”
And although the Sangsters are excited about the new project, it won’t be easy to leave The Beeches.
“It’s the first house we built so it will always feel like a home to us,” said Margo.
