Parking at work was always going to prove a difficult task for Mhairi Walker, who works as a consultant orthodontist for NHS Grampian at the Dental Hospital in Foresterhill.
So, when she found a property she loved that came with two parking permits, Mhairi and her nine-year-old daughter Isla jumped at the chance to call it home.
She said: “Parking at the hospital can be really restricted and I’d never had a property with two permits before. It not only allows me to park right outside my work, but it also means visitors can park without any hassle.”
Ideally located between Mhairi’s work and Albyn School, which Isla attends, the four bedroom flat was perfect for the family who moved from Liverpool in 2010.
Renting in city centre for a year the 40-year-old fell in love with the West End area.
She said: “The double upper apartment was exactly what we wanted. When I lived in Liverpool I stayed in a red brick old style home and it was really cool.
“I knew I wanted to stay in something similar with character, and it was the front room with the high ceilings and cornicing that sold it.”
Her favourite space, the spacious living room, boasts a huge bay window with a stunning view and a fireplace.
She said: “I like the character granite buildings have.
“The way the upstairs has been designed meant there were lots more rooms across the two floors.”
Isla, who usually takes residence upstairs playing with her friends, uses the large storeroom to keep her toys in. Converting one of the upstairs bedrooms into a gym area, Mhairi uses the space to relax after seeing patients at work all day.
She said: “We haven’t really done too much to the flat apart from decorating and changing Isla’s bedroom.”
Located on the first floor, the dining room is another one of Mhairi’s favourite spaces where she enjoys entertaining.
She said: “A previous owner extended the flat adding on the kitchen, leaving a massive dining room with a large pantry.”
There’s lots of storage too with a outhouse, shared washhouse and indoor storage area.
Mhairi is moving to Glasgow for a new job and is hoping to live nearer her family.
She said: “It’s the next big step for us so we’re going to move to Stirling or Auchterarder to be closer to my family.”
