Looking to swap city living for a slower pace of life, Katrina and Richard Mackay decided that Balmedie was the perfect location for a family pad.
The pair had previously lived separately in the centre of Aberdeen, before buying 25 Lumsden Way nine years ago with the view of raising a family in the peaceful suburb.
The five-bedroom detached property has proven to be the ideal home to raise their six-year-old daughter Megan, with two black Labradors, Kaizer and Kobe, completing the family.
But after carrying out considerable renovations to Number 25, quality manager Katrina, 40, and operations engineer Richard, 37, now have their hearts set on building their own dream home.
“When we decided on Balmedie we looked at quite a few houses,” said Katrina.
“But we just knew this one was perfect for us as it had such a homely feel. Unlike other houses it also looks out on to the woods, meaning it has much more privacy and that really sold it to us.”
The couple set about making the home their own, opening up the kitchen into a spacious family room with access to the garden. Featuring a stylish breakfast bar as well as a small lounge area to relax, the space is incredibly versatile and perfect for family life.
The main lounge is a generous room, and Katrina describes it as having a homely feel.
“It’s a really cosy room,” she said.
“There’s really nothing I like more than putting on a movie with Richard and Megan and relaxing with the dogs at our feet, particularly on a winter night with the fire on.”
The master suite is another of Katrina’s favourites.
“We have totally remodelled that part of the house,” she said.
“The master bedroom is part of a big extension we did and is a really fantastic space.
“Unfortunately between my work, taking Megan to all her after school activities and walking the dogs I don’t always have a lot of time to spend in there!”
After such an extensive DIY project , Katrina and Richard are now keen to design their own dream home from scratch. But the pair won’t be straying too far as they’re keen to stay in Balmedie.
