He’s lived Dubai, Iran and many other exotic locations around the world, but Stephen Smith is always drawn back to Crimond.

You could certainly describe the 32-year old regional account manager as well travelled, but when it comes to settling down, it seems you can take the man out of Scotland but not Scotland out of the man.

Number 1 Norman Road in Crimond has been the ideal home for Stephen and his wife Jenna, 31, to raise their two children.

And although it might seem a less glamorous location than some he’s visited, the three-bedroom bungalow was exactly what they needed.

“I lived in Dubai in particular for a while,” Stephen said.

“But I honestly prefer the lifestyle here in Scotland.

“I grew up in Crimond and most of my family still stay around this area so it always feels like home.

“I knew it was a good place to have children too, which swung my decision to come back here.”


Stephen and Jenna, who is a receptionist, bought the property in 2010 and have spent the last eight years upgrading it.

Although it was just three years old when they moved in, the pair have made considerable changes.

“The house was very bland when we moved in,” said Stephen. “There was pale laminate flooring everywhere and a beige theme.

“So we put in a new kitchen and bathroom which was more our style.

“In the garden it was all gravel, so we put down some grass and built a garage.”

It has been the perfect home to raise their children Jasmine, 11, and five-year-old Ashton, with the kitchen diner proving to be the heart of the home.

“It’s a really great space,” Stephen said.

“We spend all our time in there as it’s such a usable space with the dining table on hand.”

And the room proves impressive, with a modern kitchen and breakfast bar and family area. For entertaining there is also a separate dining room on offer, but with plenty of space to eat in the kitchen, the Smiths have found another use for it.

“We have made the dining room into a playroom,” said Stephen. “It’s a great space for the kids to keep all of their toys, and means we can keep the lounge more of an adult space.”

The property also has three good size bedrooms, one of which comes complete with an en suite.

And although they are moving, Stephen isn’t planning to leave Crimond any time soon.

“We are actually building a house about 100 metres away,” he said.
