Mark it on your calendar! Stars including Denise Welch and Ruth Madoc heading to Aberdeen for hit musical

Fern Britton will lead the glittering cast of Calendar Girls The Musical when it arrives in Aberdeen.

The TV presenter will be joined on stage by other well-known names, including Denise Welch and Ruth Madoc when Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s show arrives at His Majesty’s Theatre in February next year.

Take That star Gary said: “What a phenomenal cast we have.

“Tim and I sat in – and indeed played – on the auditions and have been so lucky to put together such talented ladies.”

Fern, who is returning to the stage for the first time in 30 years for Calendar Girls, will play Marie.

Denise, best known for her roles in Coronation Street and Waterloo Road, will be Celia, while Hi-De-Hi’s Ruth will star as Jessie.

Also joining the cast, announced yesterday, will be Lorraine Bruce, of The Syndicate fame; Anna-Jane Casey, who toured in Billy Elliot; West End star Sara Crowe and Blood Brothers star Rebecca Storm.

The musical, based on the film and play both written by Tim, enjoyed a six-month critically acclaimed run in London’s West End.

It is inspired by the true life story of a group of Women’s Institute ladies who strip off for a charity calendar, hoping to raise funds for a settee for their local hospital in memory of one of their husbands.

They attracted global attention and to date have raised £5 million for blood cancer charity Bloodwise.

The musical comedy shows life in their Yorkshire village and the effect on their families of a group of ordinary women achieving something extraordinary.

Tim grew up in the same village in the north of England as Gary and they have been friends for 25 years.

He said: “To be given a chance to revisit Calendar Girls The Musical is a unique opportunity. Gary and I have been working away and as the great Stephen Sondheim said: ‘Musical comedies aren’t written, they re rewritten’.”

Calendar Girls The Musical will be at His Majesty’s from February 19 to March 2 next year.

Tickets for the show are on sale now.
