WITH saloons, sing-alongs and sass-a-plenty from the lead sharpshooter, Calamity Jane takes the classic film to stage, effortlessly, lassoing the audience right from the start.
A simple set up allowed the cast to really shine from the moment the curtain came up.
The rousing soundtrack meant that audience participation, even for the shyest of theatregoers, came naturally.
A highly energetic and technically impressive hoedown after the interval got everyone off their feet and clapping along.
Jodie Prenger (Calamity Jane) consistently demonstrated that her strong voice is made to play the lead on stage. Clad in deerskin and firing her gun at any opportunity, she truly shines as the bold, but incredibly loveable Jane.
Emmerdale’s Tom Lister also impressed with his vocals as Wild Bill Hickok, while Bobby Delaney was fantastic as bow tie-wearing stage lover Francis. His pairing with Susan (Sioned Saunders) made for ultimate piano playing duo. And Jane’s friendship with Katie (Sophia Ragavelas) is unexpectedly heartwarming.
All in all, a toe tappin’, gun slingin’, good time in the Wild Wild West. Yee haws all round.
