An Aberdeenshire fish and chip shop is celebrating not just one, but two massive achievements.
Low’s Traditional fish and chips in Westhill Shopping Centre has been awarded the coveted blue fish ecolabel by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). This means that they can assure customers that all their cod and haddock can be traced back to a sustainable source.
Owner of Low’s, David Low, explained the importance of getting MSC certification.
“The issue of fish stocks is on the news a lot and customers are questioning whether it is okay to eat fish, so we wanted to show them that it was possible to still enjoy fish sustainably.
“Fish and chips is the UK’s most successful takeaway and we want to keep it that way for the future – getting the MSC certification will definitely help us do that. We even show customers pictures of which boat landed our fresh haddock.”
But it’s not just their food that is top quality. Low’s Traditional has had three of their team named as part of the top 10 young fish friers shortlisted in the 2018 National Fish & Chip Awards.
Alex Walker, Katie Gray and Iona Wilson will batter it out with seven other up-and-coming young friers for the title of the UK’s best young fish frier.
To get to this stage, the friers had to face a rigorous judging process, including an examination, skill based assessment, interviews, a practical skill day and a mystery shop round.
Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive of awards organisers Seafish, added: “Reaching the top 10 in a UK-wide competition is no mean feat – they should be extremely proud of themselves for making it this far.
“I wish them the best of luck in the next stage of the competition and take great comfort that our industry is going to be handed down to such talented and passionate individuals.”
Low’s Traditional was established 30 years ago by Clifford Low, who spent his entire life in the fish industry. And 14 years ago his son, David, took the helm of the business.
Over the years, the fish and chip shop has received numerous awards, including the Federation of Fish Friers five star quality award and the Eat Safe Award.
