Alex McLeish says he was never close to returning to Rangers.
Dons legend McLeish, pictured, was manager at Ibrox between 2001-2006.
He spoke to the Gers board after Mark Warburton left Ibrox.
But McLeish claimed there was never a chance of him getting the job ahead of Pedro Caixinha.
The former Aberdeen captain admits he “had doubts” over returning to the club he won the treble with in 2003.
McLeish said: “I wasn’t close. I had doubts about it.
“I did speak to them and I said that if they were to come back and offer me it, I would like to speak further.
“It was a very casual chat. It wasn’t what I would call an interview.
“It was totally different to when I first went. It just wasn’t for me at this time of my career.
“There is a lot of politics and I don’t know if I needed that at this stage of my life.”
