Gothenburg trip for young Dons

Aberdeen’s Under-17s have jetted out to Sweden in a bid to secure more Gothenburg glory 34 years after lifting the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Gothenburg Great Neil Simpson, now head of the Dons Youth Academy, has taken Pittodrie’s young guns to compete in the Gothia Cup.

The prestigious tournament is effectively the World Youth Cup and boasts teams from 82 nations.

World stars who performed in the event previously include Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andrea Pirlo and Xabi Alonso.

Aberdeen have been drawn in Group Three alongside Swedish sides AIK FF and IFK Goteborg as well as Japanese side Gamba Osaka.

For Simpson it is a welcome return to the scene of Aberdeen’s greatest triumph when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1983.

He said: “The city of Gothenburg holds special memories for myself and Aberdeen Football Club so I am looking forward to joining the squad on the trip.

“We have a strong group of players in this squad so we have a realistic chance to win the cup like we did in 1983.”
