No bid from Celtic for Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna

Aberdeen's Scott McKenna returned to action following a six month absence due to a hamstring tear.

Aberdeen have received no bids from Celtic for Scott McKenna.

Reports today suggested the Premiership champions had made an initial offer for the 21-year-old centre-back.

It is also understood the Dons will stick to their stance that the defender, who rose from the Reds youth team to captain Scotland against Mexico last season, is not for sale.

It has previously been reported the club values him at £10 million and they would be reluctant to let him leave to go to one of their main rivals.

Aberdeen have been runners-up to the Hoops in the past four league campaigns.

McKenna, pictured, is contracted to Pittodrie until 2023, having signed two new deals during the previous season.

Aberdeen have already knocked back bids in excess of £1 million for him, from English sides Hull City and Swansea City.

The Kirriemuir- born stopper, who boss Derek McInnes has said he rates as Scotland’s best, only broke into the first team

this time last year for a match against Motherwell.

He went on to earn four Scotland caps, including skippering the side in the Azteca in June, and experienced European football for the first time against Burnley in Europa League qualifying last month.

McKenna, pictured, went off 30 minutes into the league opener with Rangers at Pittodrie earlier this month. A scan revealed a tear in his hamstring, ruling him out of action for six weeks.

Speculation over potential suitors has continued to swirl nonetheless.

McInnes has said he rates McKenna as a future English Premier League star, but he wants him to continue his development with the Dons before going straight to the top flight down south.

He said: “Any offer for McKenna will need to be way over the top – whether that’s in this window, the next window or a future window.

“It’s not a matter of if Scott McKenna leaves Aberdeen. It’s when. And from my point of view, given what we want to do this season, I would rather it was further down the line.

“Having spoken to Scott often enough he sees the importance of playing games at this stage in his career.”

Meanwhile, reports have linked former Dons loanee Ryan Christie with a move to Sunderland from Celtic.

Jack Ross is said to be keen on getting the 23-year-old midfielder, initially on loan, before a permanent deal in January, to the Stadium of Light.

Christie was on loan at Aberdeen for the past season-and-a-half, but has found opportunities hard to come by since his £500,000 move from Inverness Caley in 2015.

English League One Sunderland are attempting to get back into the Championship at the first attempt.
