Fun in Focus - Race for Life

THOUSANDS braved pouring rain to take part in Aberdeen’s race for life, raising cash for Cancer Research UK.

The runners put their best foot forward to complete the 5km road race.

More than 6,000 people took part and joined in with a mass warm up at Aberdeen beach.

Two races took place, with one in the morning and another in the afternoon.

And despite the torrential rain, the event was a massive success.

Fun in Focus - Kincorth Gala

A HOT and sunny gala day was held in Kincorth.

Scores of locals came out to enjoy a day of activities including face painting, bouncy castle, and displays by karate groups and cheerleaders.

Organiser Lee Brown said: “The day was to raise money for the Kincorth Roller and Skate Park.

“The highlight for me was the football match between the kids and the police. The police won. There was also a police dog agility test. It was busy all day.”

Fun in Focus - Seaton School Fair

SEATON Primary School held its first fair for more than 10 years as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations.

And not even several downpours of rain throughout the event could dampen the spirits of all those who attended.

There was something for everyone at the fair with a bouncy castle, bungee run, face painting, sumo suits, a fire engine, a magician and even a belly dancer.

The crowd of more than 400 included pupils from the school, parents, teachers, ex-pupils, pensioners, local councillors, and people from the nearby church.

Fun in Focus - CLAN Family Fun Day

SCORES of people went to a family fun day held by a cancer charity.

Aberdeen stars Jamie Langfield, Lee Mair and Scott Severin met excited youngsters and were kept busy signing autographs.

Despite the rain, dozens of families turned up to enjoy balloon artists, face painting, arts and crafts and hand massages at the Cancer Link Aberdeen and North (CLAN) fun day.

Fun in Focus - Kevin's Day

AROUND 2,000 people enjoyed a sunshine-filled fun day in memory of a Stonehaven teenager.

Carol Humphreys, who organised Kevin’s Day in memory of her son who died of leukaemia when he was 15, described the event at Mackie Academy as “fantastic”.

She said: “We had 300 runners taking part in the three races, 15 teams for the It’s a Knockout competition and the zip slide was really popular.

“The weather was great and the rain only came on after 5pm.

“Everyone had a lovely time and it was busy all day.”

The day, which would have been Kevin’s 21st birthday, raised cash for cancer charity Clic Sargent and Carol hopes to hold another event in 2009.

Fun in Focus - Big Bike Ride

BIG-HEARTED cyclists got in their saddles to help raise money for charity.
More than 40 volunteers got on their bikes at the Childline Scotland Big Bike Ride in Aberdeen’s Duthie Park.
The target was for volunteers to cycle a 1km route through the park in order to raise funds for the charity.
In a glorious day of sunshine, parents cycled with kids on chairs on the back of their bikes, some people did up to 16 laps – a 10-mile cycle – and one man did seven laps riding a rickshaw.
Organisers said they were delighted with the turn-out.

Fun in Focus - Meldrum Sports

THE 78th annual Oldmeldrum Sports and Games weekend provided plenty of entertainment for fans.

Competitors faced off against each in other in events to the delight of huge crowds.

The weekend was officially opened on Saturday afternoon by Steven Robertson and Buff Hardie of comedy act Scotland the What?

And visitors were treated to events such as the hammer, caber tossing and the long jump.

Highland Games

THE Aberdeen Highland Games were a rip-roaring success.

More than 10,000 people passed through the gates of Hazlehead Park. 

The weather stayed dry for revellers which made their time even more enjoyable.

Organiser Audrey Walker said: “This has just been a brilliant weekend, we’ve all really enjoyed it and I’m absolutely delighted at the turnout we’ve had.”

Cove Gala

RAIN showers did not dampen spirits at  Cove.
The parade to Loirston playing fields was hit by the worst of the downpours but saw the worst of the rain as the procession made its way to Loirstone School playing fields. But the sun shone for fun events like football tournaments, pipe band and cheerleading displays.

Waldorf School

FAMILIES enjoyed bursts of sunshine at the Cults school as they ate strawberries and cream.

Kids were given a real taste of summer as they rode around on donkeys and jugglers were on hand to spin plates for enthusiastic onlookers.

Marie Joaquim, from the school’s PR department, said: “When the sun came out it was a really brilliant day and there were lots of people milling around. Everybody seemed to be in really good spirits”

Stonehaven Feein' Market

BIG Brother winner and Evening Express columnist Cameron Stout opened the annual Feein’ Market in Stonehaven.

A packed programme of acts and events in the Market Square and the Town Hall kept folk of all ages entertained.

This year’s packed programme included  the Mackie Academy Ceilidh Band, the Bon Accord Silver Band, Stonehaven Pipe Band and Stonehaven piping and drumming group Trybe.

Westhill Gala

KIDS and adults alike all had fun at the 31st Westhill Gala.

The rain stayed off and the sun peeped through for the event at the Ashdale Hall and Westhill School playing fields.

The gala programme also had a fun beastie safari, a bingo night and swimming as well as dances and discos.

Torry Gala

TORRY’s gala went ahead despite a last-minute insurance hiccup.

And the many who attended were glad it did, as they enjoyed a day with everything from rickshaw rides to  bouncy castles.

Livewire Theatre Company and kids from schools around the area also performed.

Event organiser Annie Munro said: “We had a few issues before the day, but I am really glad it could go ahead for the kids.”

Ellon Gala

CLEAR blue skies and endless sunshine made for a day of fun at Ellon Gala.

Almost 3,000 people of all ages enjoyed stalls, demonstrations and music.

The crowds were treated to performances from young bands including The Blues Buddies, Deep Water and The Miniature Disasters.

Newmachar School Fayre

SCORES of parents and kids turned out for the Newmachar School Fayre.
A lovely sunny day was the setting for a range the entertainment.
The fancy dress contest saw many colourful costumes while a seven-a-side football tournament was savoured by Dons’ mascot Angus the Bull.
Chairwoman of the parent council, Rosie Jones, said it was the biggest ever turnout.
