THE Dons returned for pre-season training today to be put through their paces in blistering sunshine by new manager Mark McGhee. The boss ran the rule over his squad as they did various exercises from sprints, to sit-ups and press-ups at Balgownie Playing Fields. Donkey

A DONKEY born in Aberdeen as Andy Murray scored his epic tennis victory has been named ... after Michael Jackson. Aberdeen council workers had been poised to name a newborn donkey after Andy Murray, the nation’s sporting idol. The baby donkey was born in Aberdeen’s Hazlehead at the very moment tennis star Andy dropped to his knees after an epic Wimbledon win over Stanislas Wawrinka. But the honour of the Aberdeen donkey’s new name instead went to Michael Jackson, the global superstar singer who died from a heart attack. Click here to buy your photos


Fun in Focus - Seaton School Fair

HUNDREDS gathered for the annual school fair at an Aberdeen primary.

Youngsters enjoyed bouncy castles, face painting and having their picture taken with a Harley Davidson motorbike.

More than £2,000 was raised for school funds at the fair in Seaton School.

Organiser, P4 teacher Maria Raffaelli, said: “It was brilliant.”

Fun in Focus - Drumtochty Castle

MORE than 4,000 people flooded into the grounds of Drumtochty Castle at Auchenblae to enjoy a string of traditional events.

Families enjoyed highlights including the tug of war and heavyweight competitions.

Kids had fun on the bouncy castle and adults browsed through the stalls.

And as the sun shone the ice cream stall proved a huge hit.

Fun in Focus - Ythan Challenge

THE ninth annual adventure race in Ellon drew hundreds of people.

The race started and finished at the Meadows and took 360 runners along the banks of the river Ythan into the Esslemont estate and back again. Tricky obstacles were scattered along the way.

One of the organisers, Michelle Rothney, said yesterday’s overcast, humid weather produced hundreds of very hot participants.

But she said: “They were running through parts of the river at times so it gave them a chance to cool down.” Click here to buy your photos


 

Fun in Focus - Wee Walks

THE inaugural Wee Walks event for WildHearts, in Aberdeen’s Duthie Park, was a roaring success with more than 500 people turning up to complete the one-mile route.

Carys Petrie, organiser of the Nairn-based charity WildHearts – which help people living in poverty around the world – said Aberdeen had proved a great first venue for the walk. Future events will be rolled out across Scotland.

Families also enjoyed taking part in fun activities on their way to the finish

line. Carys said: “The sun came out just in time for the event and the children enjoyed tucking into their healthy goodie bags on the way round.” Click here to buy your photos


 

Fun in Focus - Ferryhill Gala

DOZENS of children pulled on their football kits for a day of fun in Ferryhill.

The young teams battled it out at Albury Road School playing fields on Saturday, in glorious sunshine.

They even had a chance to soak their team mates and opponents with sponges later as the youngsters  took it in turns to be locked up in the stocks.

Fun in Focus - Skateraw Fair

A BOOGIE Wonderland theme was rolled out at this year’s fair, held in and around the Bettridge Centre in Newtonhill.

Flares and curly wigs were given an airing as about 1,000 people turned out to support Saturday’s wacky event.

Chairwoman of the event, Eileen Murray, said the hot weather and hordes of people helped.  She said: “The beer tent sold out, as did many of the other stalls. It was an extremely good turnout.” Click here to buy your photos


Race for Life

ABERDEEN’S beachfront became a sea of pink T-shirts as thousands of ladies took part in the city’s Race for Life. The sun beat down as Cancer Research UK hosted the annual five kilometre event. Women of all ages and fitness levels took part and either walked, jogged or ran along the course. Britain's Got Talent

SINGING sensation Susan Boyle shone in a glitzy gown last night as she walked out on stage in Aberdeen. The Scots star proved to her North-east fans at the Aberdeen Exhibition and conference Centre she was a singing phenomenon, as she performed in the Britain’s Got Talent live tour. Fun in Focus - Armed Forces Day

BRITAIN’S Armed Forces were celebrated in a weekend of events across Aberdeen.

On Saturday, about 1,500 serving cadet and veteran forces marched down Union Street.

Thousands cheered and waved flags as they watched pipe bands and vintage military vehicles.

As the parade passed the city’s Town House a salute was taken by Aberdeen Lord Provost Peter Stephen, the Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Angus Farquharson and Lt Col Charlie Wallace of Aberdeen University Officer Training Corps. Fun in Focus - Kevin's Day

THOUSANDS turned out for a day of fun to remember a North-east teenager who died  from leukaemia.

The event was organised by Stonehaven mum Carol Humphreys in memory of her 15-year-old son Kevin.

Money raised, which has still to be counted, will go to the charities Clic Sargent, the Anthony Nolan Trust and the  Grampian Children’s Leukaemia Trust. Kevin’s Day was held in the playing field at Stonehaven’s Mackie Academy yesterday.

Fire Brigade

Union Terrace Plans

A CITY centre for the 21st century – that was the prize unveiled today for Aberdeen.

The plan for a new civic square above Union Terrace Gardens was described as potentially the most important development for 200 years.

It would create massive amounts of room above and below ground – and potentially even more greenery than in the existing gardens.

And it could forge new links between arts, shopping and transport centres, allowing people to walk from His Majesty’s Theatre all the way to the Green – above or below ground.


 

Fun in Focus - Catterline Family Gala

FAMILY fun was had by all at the Catterline Gala Weekend. Around 300 people headed to the summer event at the community playing fields. Children were wowed by circus and magic acts while crafty folk turned their hand to making scarecrows for a competition. And speed-demons had their chance for a thrill in the annual cairtie challenge. A total of 26 soapbox carts hurtled down from the Creel Inn to the harbour with some teams having travelled hundreds of miles to participate. The winning team was from Stonehaven. IT WAS a return to the good old days for more than 1,000 North-east people who turned out for the Cove Gala. There was a back-to-school theme for the popular event which took place at Loirston School playing fields. Everest Expedition

HE CLIMBED over dead bodies. Fellow mountaineers were killed along the way as he endured unbearable temperatures of around -30C (-22F). Aberdeen man Allan Thomas was one of the lucky ones. Despite collapsing due to swelling on the brain caused by a lack of oxygen, Allan reached the summit of the world.

Hayton Road Demolition

THEY have lain empty for years. Locals describe the crumbling flats as an “eyesore” and an “attraction for trouble.” But now Aberdeen City Council has begun work to knock down the buildings – which have been there for more than 60 years. Balmoral 10k

SPECTATORS from across Aberdeenshire flocked to see a record field run in the Balmoral 10K.Corstophine's Keith Hood won the race followed by Aberdeen AAC's Ben Huskins and former Metro Aberdeen runner Mark Bilton. Obama's 100 days

BARACK Obama's first 100 days as President of the United States was commemorated in a series of intimate photographs released by the White House. The pictures show First Lady Michelle Obama playing on swings and in the snow with daughters Malia and Sasha and Mr Obama is seen running with the family's Portuguese water dog Bo. More serious moments include the president's visit to Prague, for an United Nations meeting, and his trip to meet troops serving in Iraq.


Schools football

TWO North-east sides suffered final heartbreak as they crashed to defeat in the final of the RAF Scottish School's Shield. Mintlaw Academy Girls lost 3-1 on penalties to Arbroath High School and Cults Academy U14's went down 2-0 to St Ambrose High School in their respective matches, played at Stirling Albion's Forthbank stadium.

Torcher Parade

THOUSANDS of cheering spectators lined Aberdeen’s main street for the colourful Torcher Parade. The carnival atmosphere was in stark contrast to last year’s event, which was cancelled when teenagers on a motorbike ploughed into the crowd injuring seven people. Pictures by Chris Sumner.


Choices for LIfe

THOUSANDS of screaming youngsters packed the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference centre to see their favourite music and television stars. But this was not a typical pop concert, as the children were there to learn more about the dangers of illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco. About 3,300 Primary 7 pupils from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray took part in Choices for Life.

I WAS hoping for rain to stop play, but instead the weather gods sent a beautiful summer’s night – it’s just not cricket. Well, actually, it was. As in me keeping a date with destiny at Stonehaven Thistle Cricket Club to answer some of the slurs I had bowled in their direction. Fun in Focus - Bling Fling

THOUSANDS of pounds were raised for North-east charities at a sponsored walk.

Around 400 walkers took part in the Bling Fling Trainers and Tiaras – a six-mile walk along the old Deeside railway line.

They tackled the route from Duthie Park to Cults and back again.

Participants were treated to a party in the winter gardens after the gruelling walk.

There was music by Oceans 3, who kept crowds entertained with performances of hits by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.

Therapists were also on hand to treat the weary walkers to a foot massage.

Money raised is to be shared between Prof Heys’ Breast Cancer Research at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Ward 15 at ARI’s Anchor Unit and care charity Archway.


Fun in Focus - VSA Day

THERE was fun for all the family at the VSA Day at Duthie Park.

Kids and adults were able to enjoy a variety of fairground activities, with some brave visitors raising cash for the charity by facing the zip slide.

But there was plenty of fun for the faint-hearted at the belly-dancing workshop and dog-obedience-training class.

The clouds cleared making way for the sun as families flocked to the fundraiser.

Kids enjoyed having their faces painted and had fun jumping around on the bouncy castle.

A pipe band kept the crowds entertained throughout the day.


Fun in Focus - Bon Accord Bike Ride

HUNDREDS of cyclists got on their bikes for charity at the Bon Accord Bike Ride.

Around 200 adults and children took part in the fundraising event.

Participants were given the choice of two routes – one seven miles long and another of 22 miles.

Cyclists on both routes started and finished at Hazlehead Park, with the longer of the two routes running through Deeside.

The routes were marshalled by volunteers throughout the day as the organisers – the Rotary Club of Aberdeen Bon Accord – attempted to raise more than last year’s total of £3,700.

Cash raised from the event, which is now in its fourth year, will go to Aberdeen Foyer.


Baker Hughes 10k

THOUSANDS of runners took part in the City of Aberdeen/Baker Hughes 10k run.

More than 2,500 participants completed the course around Aberdeen’s beach area yesterday.

Spanish athlete Juan Mareque was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 32min 17sec.

Mr Marque’s wife, Aberdeen-born Lyn Wilson, won the women’s race, with a time of 35min 23 sec.

Prayers for helicopter crash victims

ABERDEEN city centre fell silent this afternoon as thousands gathered to remember the 16 victims of the North Sea helicopter crash.

Mourners packed an Aberdeen church to pay tribute to the men who perished    and offer comfort to their families and friends.

WWE Wrestlemania Revenge Tour at AECC

ABERDEEN fans were gripped by the grappling gods of World Wrestling Entertainment.

The kings of the ring hit Aberdeen and wowed an enthusiastic crowd with a night of eight action-packed bouts.

Drumtochty_Arms_Hotel_Explosion

FIREFIGHTERS were today sifting through rubble after a gas blast ripped apart a North-east hotel – to make sure no one else was trapped. Three people were seriously injured in the explosion at the Drumtochty Arms Hotel in Auchenblae. But a fire chief today said it could be 12 hours before they can be sure no one was trapped in the collapsed three-storey building.

HAGGIS, neeps and tatties were the order of the day as North-east folk celebrated the life of Robert Burns.

And hundreds of party-goers toasted the Bard at a host of events across the Grampian area.

Winter Weather

THOUSANDS of kids were given a day off school as snow storms battered the North-east. And commuters struggled to work on the areas snow covered roads. But flights to and from Aberdeen Airport were not affected by the snow. Met Office forecasters had predicted the snow would not hit until the weekend. But a change in wind direction brought in freezing gales from inland.


Snow Scenes

HEAVY snowfall brought chaos to the North-east today. More than 100 schools were shut or partially closed as up to 4in (10cm) of snow blanketed the area. Several key North-east routes were closed after drifts blocked roads and left cars stranded. And snowploughs were brought in to batter a path through the snow as motorists struggled to get to work.

HE BIG freeze continued today as sub-zero temperatures cause more headaches for motorists. And the Met Office warned more snow was on the way. Overnight temperatures dipped to -3C (27F) in some areas of Aberdeenshire, with temperatures of -1.4C (29F) in the city.

HE Is better known for going head-to-head with his political opponents than performing with pop idols. So it was a bit of a shock to see First Minister Alex Salmond step “out of his comfort zone” and sing a duet with Macduff rocker Sandi Thom.


Weekend Snow

WHILE motorists steeled themselves for another week of roads chaos North-east youngsters made the most of the winter weather. Snowmen popped up in city parks and gardens and energetic kids hunted out the best slopes for sledging. And more adventurous snow-lovers built igloos and snow animals.


Bride Of The Year

THE weather caused absolute chaos.But the heavy snow and treacherous ice weren’t enough to halt the Bride Of The Year celebration. In the tough  conditions,  all  but a few  of our beautiful brides turned up for the big event.
Instead of welly boots, thermals and umbrellas,  our brides wore an array of dazzling dresses and had their tresses all sleek and shiny.And let’s not forget the hubbies  who donned their kilts despite the weather .


Strichen Fire

A MUM and two children escaped from their blazing North-east home today. Flames ripped through the home from its top to the bottom completely gutting the building. Dozens of firefighters had called to a huge blaze at a property at Mains of Strichen.


Golden Rose

THE man with the Golden Rose is back! Big Brother winner Cameron Stout has been visiting villages, towns, offices and shops across the region dressed as Mr Right on a mission to find his Golden Rose for 2009!

Snow

SNOW chaos was once again gripping Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire this afternoon.
Dozens of schools had to shut their doors and drivers struggled to control their vehicles as more flurries battered the North-east.


River Don Flooding

FLOODS hit the North-east today as snow melted and rivers overflowed. Roads were swamped with water and the River Don burst its banks at Inverurie and Kintore


North Sea Helicopter Crash

SURVIVORS of the North Sea helicopter drama today arrived back in Aberdeen hours after cheating death. A total of 18 people on board the Super Puma survived with just minor injuries after the craft ditched into the North Sea 125 miles east of Aberdeen.


Bond Helicopter arrives back in Aberdeen

The fuselage of the EC225 Super Puma helicopter which ditched in the North Sea was finally recovered from the water 125 miles east of Aberdeen after a lengthy operation. The tail of the helicopter – which contained a data recorder – has yet to be found, potentially hampering efforts to discover the cause of last week’s drama.


X Factor Live in Aberdeen

STANDING ovations, screaming girls and sensational acts – the X Factor contestants know how to wow a crowd. Aberdeen folk poured in to the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre to see the opening night of a tour not to be forgotten.


Snow Patrol

SNOW Patrol’s lead singer Gary Lightbody announced during their sell out gig at the AECC that the band would be partying hard in Aberdeen. And when Snow Patrol walked off stage, after their hour and a half set in Aberdeen, they were no doubt in a celebratory mood. RISING star Little Boots hit Aberdeen to give fans a taste of what’s in store for the pop world. The pint-sized star stormed the stage of Aberdeen’s Moshulu on Saturday. And Little Boots displayed an excitement and enthusiasm as infectious as it was endearing.

Plane Stupid

THOUSANDS of travellers faced chaos at Aberdeen Airport today as protesters invaded the airfield. Passengers at Aberdeen Airport were left stranded on planes and in terminal buildings as services ground to a halt. The chaos came after protesters broke in through the airport’s terminal fence at 3.30am and set up camp on the tarmac in protest to the Donald Trump golf development and the planned expansion of the airport.


Dons fans at Dunfermline

ANOTHER Scottish Cup game against lower league opposition – and yet more emotional torture for the Red Army. The clash with Dunfermline may have been nowhere near the rollercoaster of last season’s semi-final shame game against Queen of the South. But the Dons fans were once again put through the wringer by their team. First came the hope and anticipation, as 5,200 Dons fans traveled to Dunfermline with dreams of cup glory still firmly alive. Once inside the ground, it became apparent just how strong the Aberdeen away support was. They filled the East Stand behind one goal, took up half of the North Stand and occupied a section in the Main Stand – which made for jovial banter with the locals. Pictures by Kath Flannery

Marischal College work

ABERDEEN’S Marischal College is bustling with cranes and workmen.

Demolition crews have been at the historic Aberdeen building since August last year.

And already 1,000 tonnes of rubble has been lifted out of the building in the first stage of converting it into the new Aberdeen City Council headquarters.

These exclusive Evening Express pictures show the gutted inside of the iconic building.

 


Mexican President flies into Aberdeen

THE President of Mexico flew into Aberdeen today as part of an official state visit.

Felipe Calderon landed at Aberdeen Airport this morning, joined by the Duke of York.

He was greeted by Aberdeen City Council chief executive Sue Bruce, Assistant Chief Constable Jim Stephen and Lord Provost Peter Stephen.

Energy Minister Jim Mather and the airport’s managing director Kevin Brown were also part of the official welcoming party.

Marischal College Skeletons

THEY have been digging away for months hoping for a glimpse into Aberdeen’s past. And now archaeologists at the city’s historic Marischal College have made a stunning discovery. The skeletons of seven friars have been found in the grounds of the college, which is being transformed into a new headquarters for Aberdeen City Council.


Aboyne Fire

A MASSIVE blaze has destroyed one of the best-known businesses on Royal Deeside. More than 30 people had to run for safety as an flames ripped through Strachan’s in Aboyne. A shocked crowd looked on as an inferno engulfed the shop which sells speciality food and hardware.

FAMILIES had bundles of fun taking part in Easter weekend events. More than 2,000 people visited Doonies Farm – which was packed with children, parents and grandparents.

HOGMANAY headliner Amy MacDonald thought performing in Aberdeen was “cool” – but she wasn’t just talking about the weather. The multi-million selling artist performed a dazzling set of heart-warming anthems – in freezing conditions  –  to carry thousands of cheering and dancing Aberdonians into 2009.
