Jimmy: I won’t quit until I win trophy

PITTODRIE boss Jimmy Calderwood would rather lead the Dons to cup glory, than accept a big money move to England.

Former Red Barry Nicholson recently claimed Calderwood would have to move south to realise his ambitions.

But such is Calderwood’s desire to taste success with the Dons, he would never leave until he has lifted silverware with the club.

He said: “ It would take something special to make me leave a club like Aberdeen and go down south.

“Managing in England is maybe something that I would like to try at some point in my career.

“There have been a few opportunities that have come up but they did not suit me.”

Calderwood has been linked with Derby County and Leicester City in recent years.

But there is no way he is moving on until the Dons break their 13-year trophy drought.

“I want to win a trophy first,” he said.

“I know for a fact that I can win trophies with Aberdeen, because we can beat any team in Scotland.

”We got to two semi- finals last season. Now all we have to do is take that next step.”

Former Don Nicholson also claimed Calderwood did not get the backing needed from the board to strengthen the squad, and that was why the midfielder quit for Preston North End.

But Calderwood said: “Aberdeen have always tried to back me with regards to money.

“The board have chosen to sustain funds for the squad for the next three years so the stability is there.

“Not many teams will be able to say that.

“Many team high up in the SPL have taken a gamble but they will not be able to sustain that over the next few years.

“We will because we have a sound base.”

Sone Aluko is out of the trip to Kilmarnock with a hamstring injury.

Jamie Smith and Bertrand Bossu are also out as is striker Tommy Wright who has had a cast removed from an Achilles injury.

take the next step ? thats merely getting to a final (like he did with dunfermline) the ultimate step is to win it, not just make up the numbers - there are still a large number in the support who have never tasted success and a jolly at hampden for these guys is the holy grail - i witnessed it at our league cup capitulation back in 2000 against celtic, some people were just happy to be there - winning was for another time - reminds me of SAF blasting the players who celebrated their 1-1 draw at porkheid when he too over

The rest of the teams in the SPL will be rubbing their hands in glee, thinking xmas has came early. I really hope he proves me wrong or the board show a bit of balls, and get rid. Either eay I would be happy bacause then he would dispear. With regards to a big money move to England, you are having a laugh!!

Naaa... joking aside, i think once all the new lads are bedded in we will have strong squad and all they will need is the chance to play in the position they are best at.

You can do it Jimmy, and we are behind you(well most of us are). Things are starting to look alot better on the park now with the team gelling, and if we can get Smith fit then we will be a formidable team going forward. And David Mclennan why would the rest of the teams be happy Jimmy was staying??Is that because he has had the team up in the top half throughout his tenure and has won more than he has lost??Hmm

Linked with Derby and Leicester City??? Funny how both of these teams denied it on the spot. Also Jimmy claims to have been approached by 2 dutch teams in the summer, but he can't name them. NOBODY else wants him and that is why we are stuck with him. Do us all a favour then Jimmy, win a cup and pack your bags. Or will you lead us to the 3rd worst result in our history behind QOS and Queens Park, results some of your supporters seem to forget just because we we drew one game in Europe.

David Thompson-I for one cannot forget those two games as i was there, but i have also been there for the good games, it seems some of you JC bashers forget the good games and also where we were before JC showed up!Lame. And we actually drew more than one game in europe that season, and we also won one, seems you have a bad memory!

ah Andrew, we dont forget the good games it just the bad ones and the poor performances out weigh the good ones tenfold... I'd suggest that it isnt our memories that are bad but your that is selective

I have to say I'm getting a bit tired of all this Calderwood bashing. What is wrong with you people? Are you still bitter because of his Rangers connections? Get over it! Who exactly would you rather have and what do you think they would achieve that JC hasn't? He's been the best manager we've had for a long long time and for someone who lives in the Central belt - he's been a God send as the slaggings once received by fan's around me (when quite frankly Aberdeen were an embarrassment) are a thing of the past. And for the record David Thomson, last season in Europe we drew with Dnipro (twice), drew with Lokomotiv Moscow, drew with Bayern and horsed Copenhagen. Our defeats came at the hands of Panathanaikos, Atletico Madrid and Bayern - all away. Results like that even the Old Firm and some of the English Premiership would probably take in a European season.
