DYCE needed penalties as they scraped past Beacon Rangers into the third round of the North of Scotland Cup at Pitmedden Road.

The home side went into the game on the back of a 10-match unbeaten run and they opened the scoring after six minutes when YATES drilled past Lawson.

Dyce had chances to extend their lead, with Noble and Lynch both going close.

At the other end, Beacon’s best effort came when a dangerous ball from Eastcroft flashed across goal and eluded the strikers.

Just as it looked as if Dyce would end the half with a slender lead, the game was suddenly turned on its head in the space of three minutes.

Beacon levelled on 42 minutes when Murray’s low cross was turned into his own net by GREIG.

The visitors then shocked Dyce by taking the lead moments later.

Boyle was tripped as he ran into the Dyce penalty area, and CHEYNE made no mistake from the resultant spot-kick.

(Half-time: 1-2)

The game was evenly contested in the early stages of the second period, with both defences coping well with any attacks.

Beacon were looking dangerous on the break, and almost put the tie beyond doubt on 88 minutes, but Burnett was denied by a last ditch challenge.

However, Dyce managed to find the net in dramatic fashion with the last attack of regulation time when a cross from the right was only half cleared as far as YATES, who chested the ball down on the edge of the area and fired a dipping volley beyond Lawson.

Both sides had opportunities in extra-time, but the match was finally decided on penalties, with Dyce keeper Holmes emerging the hero as he saved two spot-kicks.
