Hutcheon digs deep to get on right track

Published:

PETERCULTER’S Greig Hutcheon recovered from a bad start to his second round in the Euro Tour’s qualifying school final to finish just one shot outside the card-winning places heading into the weekend action in Spain.

The former Tartan Tour No1 had opened with a solid one-under 71 at PGA Catalunya but his challenge for one of the 30 tour cards on offer looked to be veering off course when he covered his first six holes yesterday in five-over.

Hutcheon battled back however and a six-foot putt for an eagle on the 10th provided the catalyst for a six-under inward half of 30 which salvaged a two-under 69 for a three-under 140.

Hutcheon said: “I couldn’t keep out of the trees early on and at that stage I was going home.

“But I got my driver going eventually and it turned out to be great. It was a very good back-nine.”

His fellow Aberdonian Graham Gordon continued to toil and came in near the foot of the standings.

The former Scottish Amateur champion, who started with a damaging 77 on Thursday, could only muster a 74 and finished down in a tie for 145th with an eight-over 151.

Scottish amateur champion Callum Macaulay leads the home challenge in a share of 17th after a 67 pushed him to a five-under 138 total, six behind frontrunner Oskar Henningsson of Sweden who fired a 66 for 132.
