Matty is silver star in Canada

Published:

MARVELLOUS Matty McAllister was a knockout in Canada as he claimed silver in a five nations tournament.

The Granite City ABC boxer, who is the younger brother of Aberdeen Assassin Lee, finished second in the under-69 kg category at the St Catherines Cup.

Matty is a member of the Scottish amateur boxing squad, and was competing against pugilists from Wales, Australia, Canada and the USA.

The 19-year-old lost by a point in the final, but claims having seen the fight again, he definitely should have been awarded victory.

He said: “I lost in the final 10 seconds, with the last punch.

“At the time, I thought it was close, but when I got home and watched the DVD it looked like I won easily.

“The tournament in Canada was the first big one I have been to with Scotland, so it was a new experience for me, and I really enjoyed it.”

Matty has recently stepped up his training as he aims to be part of the Scottish boxing team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

The Scottish senior champion is about to enter some big competitions, but is confident of building on his strong showing in Canada.

He said: “I am boxing in Finland next month and then the European Amateur Boxing Championships take place in Liverpool in November.

“I am training twice a day just now, everyday except Sundays.

“I’m getting fitter and stronger all of the time.

“My aim is to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

“To make the team I’ll have to defend my Scottish title next year and get some good wins at tournaments like the Euros.

“But it’s great to fight for your country.”
