THE Junior season is less than a month old and already Culter have suffered a massive injury blow as they attempt to win the Superleague title.

Striker Chris Mountford suffered an horrendous double leg break in the Crombie Park side’s final match of last season, and now his replacement, Andy Gregory, could be ruled out for the season after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in a freak accident while training on his own.

Gregory, 26, was attempting to build his fitness after being substituted in a pre-season friendly after picking up a head knock.

He said: “I was out running on my own trying to catch up on my fitness and I planted my foot down and my right knee buckled under me.

“The doctor told me I’ve ruptured my cruciate ligament, and if it requires surgery I will be out for up to a year.

“The doctor told me that only one in five require surgery, so hopefully I will be ok.”

The former Lads Club forward must now wait up to three months to learn whether he can play again this term.

“My next appointment with the doctor is not until November, and hopefully they will scan it then and I will learn the full extent of the damage.

“I’ve been working hard with the physio, and the people at Culter have been fantastically supportive considering I have only been at the club for such a short space of time.”

Mountford suffered a broken fibula and tibia in his right leg and had two screws inserted into his knee and ankle.

He was initially ruled out for a year, but now hopes to be back in action before the end of the season.

He said: “Initially the doctors said that I would be out for a year, but I’m hopeful I will be back in action around March, and if not then certainly before the end of the season.

“I’ve had two x-rays since it happened in May and have to go back to the hospital next Wednesday to make sure that it is healing properly, but the signs are good as I have started to walk without crutches and can drive again.

“I have started my rehabilitation and have started to do some swimming.

“Banks o’ Dee kindly offered me the use of their facilities at Spain Park and I have been working hard with the physios there and at Culter, so hopefully I will be back in action soon.

“I can do a lot better than I did last season, and hopefully I can show that.”
