Webster hoping for step up to SFL

COVE Rangers were today preparing for the biggest day in their 86-year history.

Nothing has been left to chance by the Allan Park club as they bid to gain entry to the Scottish Football League.

Years of hard work, detailed planning and countless meetings were all hinging on Cove’s presentation to the 29 SFL member clubs at Hampden.

And if the Aberdeen club are given the nod, Cove winger Kevin Webster, who spent five years in the SFL with Montrose, is convinced they can thrive in the senior ranks.

He said: “Cove can definitely do well if selected for entry.

“The foundations are already there with a strong management team and backroom staff in the likes of John Sheran, Graeme Park and Ray Charles.

“Although we would have to strengthen the squad a little, we are Highland League champions and are a good side.

“It will take a period to settle in, but Cove can step up the leagues, especially if they have the right financial backing to match their ambitions.”

Cove have twice experienced the agony of having an application for senior football rejected.

The club’s presentation, overseen by chairman Keith Moorhouse, was hinging on a £5 million community stadium at Calder Park.

Boasting a fourth generation artificial surface, the stadium will have seating for 1,300 fans.

Current ground Allan Park is not SFL compliant, and Webster was hoping it would not kill off Cove’s top flight dream.

“Hopefully the SFL would look beyond the limitations of Allan Park and take Cove’s long-term plans into consideration,” he said.

“The plans for Calder Park are impressive and once completed it will be a real asset to the Cove community as a whole.

“Calder Park will have pitches open to the public, so hopefully the SFL will look favourably on that.

“Ideally the SFL will also take into consideration the club’s finances, links with the community and our long-term plans for future.”

The 26-year-old knows the rigours of senior football after five seasons with Montrose.

Former Dundee trainee Webster also had spells with Forfar and Abroath before moving to the Highland League last season.

“Aberdeen could definitely sustain a second senior club,” he said.

“There are a host of talented players in the North-east that Cove could tap into if accepted for the SFL.

“At the moment if the region’s top players do not make it at Aberdeen FC many of them tend to get lured to SFL teams down south, but Cove could capitalise on that.

“I would love the chance to play in the Third Division again.”

Cove’s presentation featured a five minute film produced by Aberdeen film AVC, highlighting the club’s ambitious plans.

“The film looks great and will add to Cove’s bid,” he said.

“When Gretna began their demise I had a suspicion Cove would apply to replace them and I am delighted they did.”
