Sir David Attenborough honoured in Aberdeen
Published:
WORLD-RENOWNED naturalist Sir David Attenborough spoke of his delight at collecting an honorary degree from Aberdeen University.
Describing his award as “a great honour”, the 82-year-old broadcaster joked that it was “very nice that the Scots should honour a Sassenach”.
And he congratulated an audience of humanities graduates at the end of a ceremony in Marischal College in which he had been awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
Looking back at his “very happy” career, he found it hard to pick out the highlights.
He said: “In 50 years there has been an awful lot. I have sat with gorillas. I have swum the coral reefs.
“I think education and entertainment should be indivisible. I make natural history programmes because they are interesting and tell you something about the world, but also because they are fun.”
Dr Alan Marcus, reader in film and visual culture, said of Sir David: It is hard to imagine any other figure who has visited our living rooms on a regular basis since the early days of television, and provided so much insight and inspiration to people of all ages.”
