Striker deal put on hold – for now

Agent warns Aberdeen

JIMMY Calderwood today said he could still sign Dutchman Iwan Redan – but warned he will have to play a waiting game.

The striker’s agent, Edward Burleson, has tried to pressurise Calderwood into making a decision about the 27-year-old.

Redan wants fixed up with a new club before pre-season training starts next week.

But Calderwood will only make an official move for Redan and his compatriot Zephaniah Davids if he fails to land other targets.

“Davids and Redan didn’t do themselves any harm at all during their trials,” said Calderwood.

“In fact both impressed, but we are concentrating on other players right now.

“So we’re not in a position to take things any further with them.

“That obviously has a risk attached to it in terms of them signing for other clubs.

“But that’s a risk we are prepared to take right now, although there is still a chance we could move for one or both of them. They have to be prepared to wait though.”

Burleson said they are all but ready to give up on the hope of a move to Aberdeen.

Former Cardiff City striker Redan is being tracked by other clubs in Holland, and could stay in his homeland.

He said: “Iwan has made it clear he would like to sign for Aberdeen but we’ve still not heard anything official.

“We haven’t quite given up hope of something happening, but if we haven’t heard by the start of next week we’ll work on the assumption it’s not going anywhere.”

Calderwood is desperate to beef up his squad after the departures of several first team players during the close season.

He added: “We are still in negotiations with certain parties over three or four potential deals.

“But it’s difficult at this time of year to make contact with players and agents.

“We just have to try to be as patient as possible, and we still have plenty of time to get things right.

“I would have liked to have had more players on board by now but it hasn’t happened yet.”

Meanwhile, Dutch defender Tim Bakens has turned down a deal with FC Volendam prompting speculation he could be on his way to the Dons.

Oh yeah Jimmy just give us their names so other clubs become aware who we want and can then try and sign them, I doubt it I think we should just wait everyone is saying we haven't hardly signed anyone yet compare to the teams around us.... Dundee Uts have sign a back-up keeper, a replacement for Noel Hunt and two young lads from Dundee so its only one or two more than us, Motherwell nobody as I far I can remember, and Hibs one player and been linked with a few like ourselves so everyone should stop critising JC and be patient because like all the other seasons we have had fairly good squads...... looking at what we spend.

Steve Brockie - If the players he wanted before pre-season have now moved or rejected us and as you SO want our 5 PLAYERS would you prefer we just signed Iwan and Davids and 3 more reject players so we can get your desperate 5 players signed. Calderwood has never got us starting the season with a poor team so I think we should all just have faith and stop moaning.

"Calderwood has never got us starting the season with a poor team " !!!??? eh? do you not remember last season? As the season ended in may both JC & WM spouted in the press about "10 new players" for next season, JC spouted "hopefull before preseason starts" and a couple of weeks ago WM promised "three big name signings". Now after the early bird ticket sales they are changing their tune, what a surprise!!!

Calderwood has never got us to start a season with a poor squad, I can see I'm talking to the Dons fans who still think we should be signing Boyd, Riordan and McFadden and win the league, I think you need to be realistic just look at our team compared to Dundee Utd, Hibs, Motherwell and maybe even Hearts (depends who if they are sorted out) I can fairly confident we will get third this season because last tear was a bad season and we still finished fourth with quite a few bad results so hopefully this season we can change that and with no distraction of the part timers only attending the "big games" we can concentrate on every game.

Ryan, you asking these certain dons fans to be realistic is asking way too much!Billy Ross for example wants the management and Miller to go because we havnt signed any big name players!!You cant argue with that sort of logic. You would think that we had been fighting relegation for the past 3 years and not consistently finishing in the top half, mainly top 4!Perhaps JC shouldnt have commented on how many players he was going to sign as those waiting for a slip up(most folk on here)have just gone on and on about it. Yes it would have been great to have signed some class players by now but we have a month to go, so stop whining and wait! Stand Free

Ryan Watt - look up sarcasm in the dictionary eh ;) My point is that he shouldnt promise us x amount of player by x of the month, instead he should just tell us as and when we sign players rather than building up the hopes of the fans. If he doesnt go broadcasting deadlines for signings maybe he wouldnt feel pressuried into making desperation buys. As for dons fans expecting McFadden, Boyd and Riordan, I cant think for a second that anyone expects that.

And still Jimmy this Jimmy that what has he done wrong ? Fair enough he does make some strange tatical desicions which I don't understand but at the end of the day every season we have finished in the top six and got us UEFA which im sure he'll do again and on a small budget he has signed quality players like Smith, Severin, Miller and McDonald my be good when he plays this season so I think everyone should support Jimmy and the dons and stop critising them for nothing and the season hasn't started yet. Who cares if he doesn't sign that three players honestly nobody will really know them and I doubt the will excite any of you so just wait and let him to what he needs to.
