Defender offered new deal at Dons
Three-year deal on offer for defender
Published:
ABERDEEN have offered young defender Andrew Considine a new contract.
The Dons ace, 21, is in the final year of his current deal but has earned the chance to extend his Pittodrie stay.
Club supremo Willie Miller is hopeful the Scotland under-21 cap will put pen to paper on a fresh agreement with the club.
“Andrew has done well in recent seasons and we’re hopeful he’ll accept our offer of a new contract,” said Miller.
Chris Maguire has also been offered new terms and Miller will hold talks with the pair when they return for pre-season training next Monday.
The duo are understood to have both been offered terms to keep them at the club until 2011.
Miller added: “Both Andrew and Chris are in the final year of their contracts and I would like to think both will stay and continue to make progress with us.
“We’ll talk to them both next week and hope to be in a position to make a positive announcement.”
Considine suffered an indifferent campaign last term and could be forced to battle it out with Dutch defender Tim Bakens for a place in Jimmy Calderwood’s team.
The 25-year-old has claimed Calderwood has spoken to him about the possibility of moving to the Dons.
Bakens is available for free after turning down a new deal at RKC Waalwijk.
He said: “Jimmy Calderwood called me to ask if I would be interested in a move to Aberdeen.
“I said I would and he told me he would call me back in a couple of days but I have not heard anything.”
Bakens has been offered a deal at FC Volendam and also has the chance to go on trial in Belgium.
Calderwood is chasing a new central defender, a striker and a wide midfielder.
He could yet be forced to land a right back as Alan Maybury is still stalling on an offer from the Dons.
The Republic of Ireland cap impressed at Pittodrie last term and Calderwood wants to tie him to a new long-term deal.
Maybury is expected to hold further talks with the Dons boss next Monday.
Meanwhile, the Dons have again been linked with moves for Dundee United’s Mark Kerr and Alan Gow, of Rangers.
Kerr will part company with the Tannadice club at the end of the month and is wanted south of the border.
Gow turned down a move to Burnley as part of the Kyle Lafferty deal.
Calderwood is a known admirer of both players but there is not expected to be any transfer activity until the Dons boss returns from holiday.

So much is wrong about this news today. Firstly, Considine being given a contract extension is baffling - despite scoring twice in THAT semi-final, the man couldn't deal with long balls from journeymen footballers that day and was at the heart of a defence that lost 4 goals to those nomads. Never mind all the other errors that riddle this guy's game such as opening day last season at Tannadump. I'm not even going to get started with Maguire - an enigma of the highest order. Now, on to the manager who - according to this article - remains on holiday and no transfer activity will take place till he's back....I though Willie Miller was taking care of all this. Shouldn't new players be there for the start of pre-season training? Shouldn't the start of pre-season training be about getting the squad ready for the big kick-off? Craig Levein has been working his behind off getting United ready, not giving a 2nd's thought to his tan. Finally, the Maybury thing is beyond a joke - end of May: "Maybury answer this week..." start of June: "Maybury to give Dons aswer by weekend..." last week: "Maybury doesn't rule out Pittdrie stay...." and now this - NEXT MONDAY! Club's a joke....game's a bogey. Come on Dons, we could have it so good!!

I dont think Considine getting an extension is questionable at all!He isnt anywhere near the finished article and is still making silly mistakes but he is still young and i think he has done well and will improve, same with Maguire, although lets hope Chris has been at the gym as he gets blown off the ball. Gazza red is totally right about Maybury, Calderwood should get him told and stop wasting our time, and if we sign Kerr and Gow then ill forgive the dons for a very boring close season so far!!

I agree with Andrew Mitchell re: Considine...he is still young and learning his trade. We'd be quick enough to complain if his contract ran down and he was picked up by another club for peanuts next season. I just cant believe we are waiting around for Maybury. He's a decent player but we can all see he'll be off at the first decent offer he gets from down South. The Dons could do themselves a favour by telling him publicly he's stalled for far too long and we no longer want him. Surely that type of approach might stop players stringing us along in the future...

Couldn't agree more with Mitchell and Brown (sounds a great name for a double act) Considine is still learning his trade. Sure he makes mistakes, who doesn't, but he has shown a lot of promise and deserves another contract. As for Maybury the Dons should write him of if he is taking so long to decide.

Better come out of your holiday mode jimmy. I am dying to see if any of the players mentioned that A. F. C. are supposidly interested in ever set foot in pittodrie. Bakens. Gow. Kerr. Reden. Obriens not wanted now i read. Lets not forget the statement by the management 10 new players jimmy will be given the money to spend what on His Holidays. That it seem as far as the newspapers report is ongoing. Dont tell me your in Holland Already Jimmy checking out the Dutch Amateur league. Plus Maybury is playing with the club its time to get tough or get rid of the management.
