The Spider’s Web: Station Road, Dyce
Published:
I MUST take my dad out for lunch more often.
Especially when his choice of food extends to an even cheaper than chips toastie.
Which meant that what was intended to be a treat for him turned into a real treat for me.
To explain, the old man came up from Edinburgh for a few days, so I trotted him out to Dyce to see the site of the RAF base where he was stationed for a while.
He was disappointed that nothing remained, so I decided to cheer him up with a pint and bite at the ever popular Spider’s Web.
You can tell it was popular by the way it was heaving on a weekday lunchtime. But all dad wanted was a cheese and ham toastie which cost all of £1.65.
I had a cunning ploy though, by ordering haggis fritters (£3.95) in a bid to tempt him to try something a bit finer.
“No, ta” he said, leaving me to eat the lot. No hardship, given these morsels of haggis were near perfection. A light breadcrumb held in the moist pudding, while a creamy, whisky sauce gave it zing.
Not as much zing as my main course, the chilli enchiladas (£5.65). Surrounded by a mountain of chips and rice – half portions of each were offered – this was a warming, filling, rich dish. The fluffy tortilla cut easily to reveal a huge quantity of chilli. Shot through with pepper and onion it had enough fire in its belly to put a smile on my face.
Cheap, cheerful and high quality – what more can you ask for of a pub lunch?
