EATING out should be a divine experience. But too often you face grey food hell on the bar and pub scene.

So say hallelujah for one spot in a former city centre church that makes its grub heavenly.

Welcome to Soul. We certainly were, by the smiliest waitress around, despite having the urchins in tow. It might be one of the coolest places in town, but it’s still family friendly.

Our youngest gang member loved her chicken nuggets and chips (£3.95), probably because they were made with top quality chicken breast.

The same was found on our loon’s Southern Fried chicken wrap (£6.95) with tomato salsa to give it zing.

So far so good. Now for the lift in to the premiere league of pub dining ... my other half’s wok fried beef with black bean, chili and noodles (£8.95). This wouldn’t have been out of place at the finest of Chinese restaurants.

Tender beef, and lots of it, marinaded in a piquant, if at times intense, sauce, flash fried with bamboo shoots, onions and peppers. Simply superb – but mine was better.

I ventured into the veggie options with the asparagus and wild mushroom risotto, with fresh mint and lemon (£6.95).

This creamy, perfectly-cooked dish offered a riot of flavours. The woody mushrooms complemented the crunchy freshness of the asparagus. Lemon juice added sharpness and the mint was just a suggestion.

Brilliant.

Prayers for fine food answered, we will be back.
