MINTLAW’S version of the Famous Five are looking to make Scottish Schools Cup history tomorrow night.
Midfielder Leanne Reid, defender Jenni Davidson, striker Lisa Kidd, full-back Stacie Fraser and midfielder Faye Robertson will play for Mintlaw Academy against St Augustine’s in the final of the Scottish Schools’ Senior Shield at Forfar West End (6.30pm).
The quintet are aiming out to win an amazing fifth national title in a row.
They have won the Senior Shield for the last two years, and also took the Junior version in the two previous years.
The girls are now looking to extend their winning streak against the Edinburgh school.
Coach Murray Carnie said: “They are all remarkable players in their own right. It would be great if they could make it five in a row as it has never happened before at this level.
“It would also be a marvellous feat for a school the size of Mintlaw.”
Mintlaw is now seen as the top area in Scotland for young female football talent. Scotland international Kim Little who now plays for Europe’s top female side Arsenal at the age of only 17, is a former pupil and played in the previous two finals appearances.
Mintlaw have also won the prestigious national Coca-Cola 7s for the last five years, which resulted in trips to tournaments in Spain and Portugal.
Murray said: “The success has been down to the hard work of the army of coaches we have in the area.
“They have encouraged more girls to take part in the sport and it has given the whole area a lift.”
