MARK McGhee has turned down Hearts to sign a new deal with UEFA Cup-bound Motherwell.

The Gothenburg Great and his No2 Scott Leitch were both being tracked by Hearts.

McGhee was due to fly out to Lithuania for talks with Hearts chief Vladimir Romanov but did a U-turn at the airport.

Now Motherwell chairman John Boyle has convinced the duo to stay, with both securing pay rises.

McGhee, 51, said: “I just decided I had to see it out a bit longer at Motherwell.

“A move to Hearts would have been premature.

“It smacked a bit of what I did earlier in my managerial career, when a big job came up I went for it.

“I have to give a little back to Motherwell so I will stay.”
