Four Mile House: Old Skene Road, Kingswells

HERE was the deal: I could watch the football if I took The Boss out for tea.

Never has an easier deal been struck, I thought.

The restaurant was busy as we arrived, which is always a good omen for the evening.

Unfortunately, it appeared to be too busy for the staff, who took their time to notice us.

When we were finally seen to, I opted for the surf n turf (£5.15) to start, a collection of king prawns and chicken in a light batter.

Accompanied by a plum sauce, the chicken was nice and tender, while the prawns were also cooked to perfection – not too soft, but with a nice crunch. My roast chicken Doric (£8.50) was as large a dish as you will find, with the half chicken lovely and tender.

However, there could have been a bit more gravy, as the accompanying skirlie just made it a little bit too dry.

My girlfriend’s starter of garlic mushrooms (a slightly-pricey £4.85) was simply mushrooms in a garlic sauce, which she described as “tasty”.

Scampi (£8.65) was the order of the day when it came to her main course, and the crispy scampi, fresh salad and coleslaw soon disappeared.

The total bill, including two drinks each, came to £34.90.
