The Hogshead: Belmont Street, The Academy, Aberdeen

SHOPPING, I hate it, and the January sales just make it worse.
So it was a great relief to find the quiet haven of the Hogshead.
Bright and airy, with friendly staff it was the perfect antidote to the barging bustle of the busy sales.
My friend plumped for the traditional fish and chips (£6.45).
The large fish was coated in dark, crispy batter that was crunchy to the bite. Inside the soft white meat melted in the mouth. The dish arrived accompanied with a side serving of tartar sauce, lemon, salad and chips.
My friend quickly polished off her meal, giving it the seal of approval.
With a wide array of burgers on offer, feeling adventurous, I went for the Cajun veggie burger (£5.45).
It promised a spicy meal, and did not disappoint. A novel spin on the veggie burger it was packed with mixed peppers, beans and sweetcorn.
But it was the hot Cajun spices and salsa topping that gave the burger that extra zing that had me reaching for my pint of chilled lager.
The accompanying chips were lightly cooked, golden and with very little grease.
My only gripe is that there was not enough of them.
The Hogshead offers a relaxed atmosphere – but please, stop showing Big Brother on the plasma screens.
That drivel put me off my grub.
