New Mains of Scotstown Inn: Jesmond Square East, Bridge of Don

Published:

TUCKED away in the suburbs this hidden treasure is an oasis.

You don’t expect such a venue to be heaving in midweek, but there were enough “ladies who lunch” in the spacious lounge to give it a pleasant buzz.

The smart young waitress was on our case straight away, guiding us to a table for two and taking our drinks orders.

She didn’t mention the specials board, but I quickly sniffed it out and from it ordered tattie soup (£2.20) and chicken in a barbecue sauce topped with bacon and cheese (£6.95).

My wife passed on the starters but ordered steak pie (£6.95) from the main menu.

The tattie soup wasn’t the mighty stuff my dear old mum used to feed us (you could stand your spoon up in it) but it passed the taste test.

The main courses soon followed, and my wee wife was almost floored by the size of her steak pie, which came with peas and chips. Size isn’t everything, but it was big on flavour as well, with lots of tender, juicy steak and light puffy pastry.

My chicken was also a hit, packed with flavour, accompanied by a crisp salad, garlic bread and a diet-busting portion of chips.

Our appetites were well satisfied, but curiosity led us to the Razz Jazz (£3.50) from the sweet menu, a refreshing raspberry cheesecake-style dessert.

With drinks, the bill came to £22.35.
